“If there are two golden rules to being Silvio Berlusconi, they are to stay in the limelight and to blame others for your own misfortunes. He achieved both this week after he was hit in the face by a man with a history of mental illness. As Italy agonised for a second day about whether the attack was a product of what the prime minister called the climate of hatred against him, Mr Berlusconi was quick to exploit from his hospital bedside the sympathy that many had expressed.

Fabrizio Cicchitto, the leader of Berlusconi’s The People of Freedom party in the lower house of parliament, said the attack was primed by a “pitiless campaign of hatred”. Mr Cicchitto went on to name those whom he alleged were responsible for that campaign: the newspaper La Repubblica, the news magazine L’espresso, Marco Travaglio, the author of a book about Mr Berlusconi’s alleged links with the mafia, both opposition parties, and certain criminal prosecutors. That’s quite a list, and to name a journalist as having anything to do with an assault by a deranged man, either directly or indirectly, is a tried and tested technique from a darker period of European history. Not content with slanderous statements, Mr Berlusconi intends to legislate. His interior minister said that the cabinet meeting tomorrow would consider two new bills restricting demonstrations and curbing “hate sites” on the internet.

Instead of seeking political scapegoats, the 73-year-old media tycoon should ask himself why 250,000 Italians flocked to a No Berlusconi Day in Rome earlier this month. In the rest of Europe and beyond, there are demonstrations against policies or governments. In Italy, people demonstrate against a prime minister not for what he represents, but for who he is. For good reason. Here is a man embroiled in sex scandals detailing his alleged use of prostitutes. Losing immunity from prosecution, he is on trial in two cases for fraud, tax evasion and bribery. And for this, he seeks to blame journalists, newspapers, and criminal prosecutors who insist on doing their job and refuse to be cowed by him.”

Han (한;恨) is different from what Germans believe means hatred or bitterness. When I tried to explain the term to a friend today, who is currently learning Korean, I found it difficult as it roots from the hardships and sufferings endured by Koreans throughout the Korean history. I knew, that it refers to what Koreans call unfinished business (as in ”unresolved resentment”), but in order to explain it to my friend and, consequently, know more about it myself, I decided to find more information about its meaning and stumbled upon a dissertation on the modern history of Korea and its religions.

There, it says: “Han, which does not exist in Chinese and Japanese societies, is a complex mental situation of yearning, frustration and mild hostility” that has been accumulated over decades and been passed on to next generations as it manifests itself in religion as well. (Although, I believe, today it is commonly used without its historical or religious context.) Han is the unsettled state of the mind that expresses itself in worry, the wish for a resolution, accumulated anger and bitterness of heart.

There is also a West Wing episode titled Han, where a young Korean pianist wants to defect. This is how the concept of Han is explained during the episode: “There is no literal English translation. It’s a state of mind. Of soul, really. A sadness. A sadness so deep no tears will come. And yet there’s still hope.”

This is my list of favorites from the last decade. I chose only one movie from the current year, probably because the best movies are coming out this month. The order could change tomorrow and, like every list, nobody will completely agree with it. :)
Still, what do you think? Something that really should be in here? Or do you see a movie that shouldn’t have a spot on this list?

@solidar: No, I haven’t watched Miami Vice yet because lots of people told it wasn’t any good. But I’ll trust your taste and put it on my to-see list. :)

It’s 2.25 AM.

I just got home after 16 hours working for an editorial project as part of our Master program. Yes, 16 hours. And the best part was that today was supposed to be dies academicus, since it’s the anniversary of the foundation of the university (600 years… yeah baby!). But of course, we didn’t care about that.

It was devastating, we worked hard, but I have to admit we also had a lot of fun, sharing meals, drugs (aspirin, of course) and making jokes, that of course degenerated with the passing of the hours.

I had already decided to skip the first class tomorrow morning (9 AM), but the Professor sent an e-mail tonight, informing us that she is sick and won’t be teaching any classes tomorrow.

Kharma? Fate? Irony? Who knows?

Life can be weird and beautiful sometimes. :)
